Shampoo

Shampooing the hair is the easiest of all the maintenance steps. As an added bonus, you should also shampoo your lace wig to keep it looking fresh and new. Some women choose to shampoo their hair while wearing the lace wig.

This is not advised because the thin layer of air in between will help to promote bacteria and fungus while drying. If you do choose to do this method, air drying cannot be done as you must use a hooded dryer. For those who do not mind removing the lace wig, remove the lace wig as you always would and then shampoo.

You can shampoo your own hair in braids if that is how you wear your hair under the lace wig. This is also a good time to care for the lace wig since it is removed. Lace wig shampoos are different from hair shampoos that attend to the scalp so purchase wisely.

Conditioning

A conditioning shampoo can be used so you do not have to wait as long to reapply your lace wig. If you are someone with damaged hair or do not mind taking the extra care time, educate yourself on the co-washing method.

Co-wash is short for conditioner wash. Since many shampoos contain drying sulfates and conditioners are now designed to also cleanse the hair, a conditioner is strong enough to loosen dirt and product from the hair. Under the lace wig, your hair is more likely dry than oily from product. You can gently scrub with your fingertips and water, conditioner mix.

Other products to use are baking soda and water, apple cider vinegar and water or a clarifying shampoo for oily hair. Deep conditioners should be applied at least once per month depending on how often you shampoo and condition your hair.

Regular Trims

Trimming the hair promotes hair growth and healthy hair in general. If you have split ends that are left unkempt, it can eventually damage the whole hair shaft and cause hair loss. As the hair grows in a specific cycle, you should get regular trims to speed this growth cycle.

Going to a professional for your trims is the best idea unless you have some hairstyling experience and knowledge. You can always cut your hair on your own to get rid of split ends but if you want an even cut and to only target split ends, a stylist will be able to see these easily and provide you with the proper cut.

General Tips

Avoid using cotton and nylon lace wig cap netting. These two materials are known to cause hair breakage. Lace wig cap alternatives are gel caps and silk caps. Often, these 2 are used in conjunction to provide the most natural appearance by hiding knots and also protecting the hair.

Another tip is to braid or wrap your hair on your head. For those with long hair, balling up your own hair under the lace wig cap will create split ends and breakage. Braiding the hair will create the best fit since the lace wig will lay flat on top of the scalp. If you do not want to feel any type of bumps, opt out for flat twists or wrap the hair.
